What this site is built to, what we test it against, what we know is imperfect, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.
Our commitment
We build for WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We think a consultancy that asks clients to govern AI responsibly should be able to show its own work, so this page says what we actually did rather than what we intend.
This statement covers beai.nz. It was last reviewed when the site was built and is reviewed whenever the theme changes.
What is built in
Every page has one h1, headings that descend in order, a skip link to the main content, and named landmarks, so a screen reader can move through a page by structure. Every navigation region is labelled. Decorative graphics, including the animated diagrams, are hidden from assistive technology; the page never depends on them to make sense.
Every control can be reached and operated from the keyboard, in the order it appears. The focus indicator is a solid three-pixel outline chosen to stay visible against the paper, against a solid orange button and against the dark band, because a focus ring you cannot see is the same as no focus ring.
Body text meets 4.5:1 against its background and large text meets 3:1. The visible edge of every button, field and option meets 3:1, which is the part most sites miss. Colour is never the only way meaning is carried: where a colour signals good or caution, a word or an icon says the same thing.
Buttons, links and form controls are at least 44 by 44 pixels. Form fields have real labels, errors name the field and say what to do, and nothing is validated only by colour.
If your device or browser is set to reduce motion, every animation stops. The diagrams hold a still frame, and nothing moves, flashes or auto-plays. Text can be zoomed to 200 per cent without losing content, and the page reflows to a single column rather than scrolling sideways.
How we test
Structure, landmarks, headings, labels, alternative text and keyboard order are checked automatically against every page of the site on every build, and the build fails if any check fails. Every colour pair in the design system is calculated against the WCAG contrast formula rather than eyeballed. Layout is checked at phone, tablet, laptop and desktop widths.
Automated testing catches structure, not experience. We also walk the site by keyboard alone.
What we know is not perfect
The six-stage spine on section headers scrolls sideways on a narrow phone. It is a secondary wayfinding device and every destination in it is also in the main navigation and the footer, but it is a horizontal scroll and we would rather it were not.
We have not yet had the site tested by users of screen readers outside our own team. If you use one and something does not work, that report is worth more to us than another automated pass.
Documents we send by email, such as a written AI roadmap, are produced case by case and have not been audited to the same standard as this site. Ask us and we will send the content in whatever format works for you.
